Jay's
Baja Build-up "Project Half-Gallon"
Well
after a few trips out with us Jay decided that he wanted to build a baja. He
decided to name this Project Half Gallon, because we got the bug from my cousin
and all me wanted was a half gallon of Canadian Mist for it. Here are a few
pics of the bug when we got it. It is a 1977 Standard Beetle F/I car without
engine.
Now
onto cutting & turning the front end. The first thing to GO was the sway
bar. Since they are useless offroad and just limit the independant front suspension
I
like to wrap tape around the beam to get a reference to cut the beam. Keep in
mind that there are torsion springs that run thru the beam and don't cut toooo
far. I usuall stay about 2" on each side of the center bolt to leave enough
room for the pipe wrench. Remember only cut ONE tube at a time.
After
you get it cut all the way around grind a good "V" so you get a good
weld in there.
This
is where the fun starts. We cut off the front and back of the bug. Its starting
to look like a baja now!!!
First
thing to do is to scribe a line across both beams. We use this for reference
later so we know how much to turn the beam.
